Museums of India – Baroda Museum

Date of Issue – 20 December 1994

Hi ! In today’s post I am going to share this nice Indian se-tenant pair of stamps on Baroda Museum. It’s a great pleasure to write here that I got a chance to see this museum during my visit to Stampmania 2009. It is an exquisite grand museum with several sections of Civilization, culture, art, natural history, European Art & art objects from different countries with a very rich collection of objects of pre-historic era. I cannot forget the huge skeleton of Blue Whale kept in the museum that was amazing. India Post issued a pair of se-tenant stamps to commemorate Baroda Museum on 20 December 1994 which depicts a 6th century Bronze sculpture of Rishabhanatha. It is one of the most magnificent pieces of Baroda Museum. I am also pleased to write that Mr Pradip Jain of Patna has sent this pair of commemorative stamps & its FDC to Baroda Museum in an exhibit form for display in the museum near this original Bronze sculpture. I wish when I visit Baroda (New name –Vadodara) next time I see this sculpture with this beautiful philatelic item. Well, besides this museum I visited other remarkable places of the city and enjoyed a lot. The visit of a city in not complete without shopping & enjoying the cuisine of that particular city. Well, I had enjoyed the special Guajarati food in the evening after the exhibition and visited Malls of Baroda with a nice shopping of typical Gujrati fabric from a small market Mangal Bazar which had number of shops of typical Gujrati dress material known as “ Bandhani”.

Bandhani is a type of dyeing practiced mainly in the states of Rajasthan and Gujarat. The term bandhani is derived from the Sanskrit word banda ("to tie").Bandhani is also known as Bandhej or Tie Dye or Bandhni or Bandana etc. as per the regional pronunciation. Bandhani work involves tying and dyeing of pieces of cotton or silk cloth, The main colours used in Bandhani are yellow, red, green and black. Bandhani work, after the processing is over, results into a variety of symbols including, dots, squares, waves and strips. Bandhani pieces can be dyed by natural and artificial colors. The main colours used in Bandhani are natural. In fact, all colours in bandhani are dark, no light color is used, and the background is mostly in black / red cloth. Well it is not fair if I forget to mention ‘Bandhani’ the great art work of Gujarat which is known for its bright & exquisite designs all over the world. Last but not the least Gujarat is the state of wonderful people, very friendly and loving. It is the state full of colors and a big variety of sweet & sour cuisine and taking food in a Gujarati restaurant is a very typical and warm experience as it has not only the mouthwatering taste but has the warmth of Gujarati culture filled with courtesy and a great sense of hospitality ! It is the wonderful Baroda city that I saw through my eyes !!…..This is all in today’s Post……Till Next Post….Have a Great Time !!
