Festivals of India - Deepawali

Wishing you all a very Happy Diwali !!

Diwali is also known as Deepawali, or the Festival of Lights. Light is significant in Hinduism because it signifies goodness. So, during the Festival of Lights, ‘deeps’, or oil lamps, are burned throughout the day and into the night to ward off darkness and evil. Homes are filled with these oil lamps, candles and lights. Diwali is celebrated on the last day of the last month of lunar calendar.

This weeklong festival is a tradition in every Hindu household around the world. It is the beginning of the New Year, a start to a new fiscal year and a brand new beginning for all. Diwali is celebrated for five days, each day having it’s own significance and ritual. Many legends and myths are also attached to each day. Each region of India celebrates Diwali in it’s own unique way.

In northern India, Diwali is dedicated to the worship of Lord Rama, who had been exiled from his empire, India, for 14 years. During that time Lord Rama fought and won tenuous struggles in the south part of the Indian sub-continent (what is now Sri Lanka). Diwali marks his victorious return to his kingdom. The word “Diwali” is the corruption of the Sanskrit word “Deepavali” – Deepa meaning light and Avali, meaning a row. It means a row of lights and indeed illumination forms its main attraction.Diwali is the festival of Laxmi, the Goddess of prosperity and wealth. It is believed that Goddess Laxmi visit everyone during Diwali and brings peace and prosperity to all.

Hi ! One week long celebration was held in all post offices of the country from 9 October to 15 October 2009. 13 October was celebrated as Philately Day. Workshops on Philately & stamp design competition was organized by Postal Department at different places. Here is a news about a painting competition, held in Chandigarh. The winning entries show magnificent paintings on the theme of environment. Heartiest congratulations to the children who got prizes in this competition. The paintings are so beautiful and really deserve to be chosen for the design of postage stamps. Our thanks to Mr Rakesh Walia for this Post. In the series of celebrations during National Postal Week being celebrated w.e.f. 09.10.2009 to 15.10.2009 , “ Philately Day” was celebrated today on 13.10.2009. On this occasion a “Design a Stamp” painting competition for school children was organized by Chandigarh Postal Division in Chandigarh GPO at 1100 a.m. The theme of painting was “Environment conservation”. About 125 children from various schools in Chandigarh participated in the competition. Following children secured Ist, IInd and IIIrd positions in this competition, which was decided by jury of judges comprising of Mr. Rakesh Walia an eminent philatelist, Philatelic Club Chandigarh, Mr. Narender Singh Yadav Manager Mail Motor Service, Chandigarh, Mr. Balbir Singh Manager Customer Care, Chandigarh

First Prize : Miss Gurjeet Kaur Saini , Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School, Chandigarh
Second Prize : Miss Parminder Kaur Govt Model Sr. Sec. School Sector 40B, Chandigarh
Third Prize : Mr Ankit Govt Model Sr Sec School Sector 40B Chandigarh

Mr U.D. Gouttem S.P. (HQ), Chandigarh Division, Chandigarh gave away the prizes and certificates to the winners. Vote of thanks was presented by Sh Balbir Singh Manager Customer Care Centre, Chandigarh.

Louie Braille’s Birth Bi-Centenary Stamps which has Braille imposition over the commutative postage stamp affixed covers are available at Philatelic Counter of GPO, Bangalore soon after the release. Those who are posting any letter/post card can get this

Today is Philately Day, celebrated all over the country during one week celebration of National Postal Week from 9 – 15 October. 13th October is being celebrated as Philately Day in all Post Offices of the country. Gandhiji writes a Postcard – a competition for children….

Children are invited to write a letter on a Competition Post Card as Gandhiji would on ny burning current topic. The competition will be called “Gandhiji writes a Postcard”.The postcard in this case will be the competition postcard which should be placed on
sale at all Post Offices.

1. Who can participate
The competition will be held for two categories:-
(i) Category I Class IIIrd to Vth
(ii) Category II Class VI to VIIIth
2. How to participate
There will be no entry fee. The children will purchase the competition post card at its
face value of Rs. 10/- directly from the Post Offices.

3. Activities involved
Students to write on Competition Post Cards to share the ideas of and mulate the Father of the Nation. They will write as he would have written on any urning problem of today.

(i) The students will purchase the competition post cards from a post office at its ace value, write on it on the given topic and post it to the Chief Postmaster General f the Circle, on the notified post box number.

(ii) The competition will be in English / Hindi. Word limit will be minimum 25 ords (on the obverse side only) and sender’s particulars like name, age, class, chool, date of writing, address etc. are to be given in the blank part near the address portion.

(iv) Circles will hold a prize distribution ceremony for the best three entries
selected
(v) Three best entries will be selected at Circle level and will be sent to
Directorate

Last date for Competition Postcards to be posted to HOCs 30.10.2009

A special cover was released on 09.10.2009 to mark the 100 years of Satyabadi Bana Bidyalaya, Sakhigopal, Puri. The school(Gurukul) was founded in 1909 at Satyabadi near Sakhigopal, 15 Kilometer from Puri, by five well known social reformers of Orissa, Pandit Gopabandhu Das, Pandit Acharya Harihar, Pandit Nilakantha Das, Pandit Godabarish Mishra and Pandit Krupasindhu Mishra, which were known as Panchasakha. The School was visited by Mahatma Gandhi in 1921 and appreciated the pious environment and the dedicated teachers of this Gurukul of Orissa which was later termed as “Man making factory”. The cover depicts the open air classroom of Satyabadi Bana Bidyalaya and the Panchasakha. The cancellation depicts the flame. The cover was designed by Pradip Mohanty, Philatelist. The cover was released by veteran freedom fighter Chandrasekhar Nayak in a function held at the Satabadi Bana Bidyalaya. Ex MP Braja Kishore Tripathy, MLA Prasad Harichandan, Gopal Nanda, Ex-DGP, Orissa were among other dignitaries of the function. A small philatelic exhibition was also held on the occasion. The exhibits of Haripada Panda on Orissa theme were displayed in the exhibition. Philatelists from Bhubaneswar and Cuttack attended the function.

In the meantime, the international jury for BEIJING 2009 AEROPEX has been appointed: Jury president is Stephen Reinhard (USA), the other jury members are Brian L. Asquith (England), Fiorenzo Longhi (Italy), Aranaz Fernando (Spain) and David Lu (China). Lim Sa Bee from Singapore and Giangiacomo Orlandini from England serve on the Expert Team.

It would be a pleasure if you could attend BEIJING 2009 AEROPEX in person, but this is no requirement for exhibitors: Various international commissioners have been appointed and they can take your collection to and from China in case you can not make it to BEIJING 2009 AEROPEX. Hi ! This is the last lot of covers received by me with 9.9.9 cancellations. I express my gratitude to all who took pains to post me a letter on 9.9.9 on my request and also special thanks to those readers who sent me 999 covers after reading through my blog that I am collecting 999 covers. Some of the readers had sent me a number of covers to ensure that I should get at least one with proper cancellations. I want to mention few names to pay my special thank – Mr Seetha Raman,Chennai, Mr Ashwani Dubey, Gprakhpur & Mr Naresh Agarwal, Bilaspur – Chhattisgarh. How nice of you !! Many thanks that you put lot of time to write my address many times on Cards / Covers. I am also publishing here covers sent for 999 but unfortunately could not get proper cancellation by chance. Many thanks to them too for posting me letter on this special date to help me to make my collection … So kind of you and I am sorry to all those who did not receive the cover from me with proper cancellation… as it is a matter of chance and depends on the person at counter, In-charge of Canceling mails. Sometimes the Postal staff is very considerate and does as per instruction of the sender but often it doesn’t happen so, especially at big and busy post offices…With a big thanks to all of you I display here the last covers & Cards received by me.
