Six Finnish women have been honoured by Finnish Post with their own postage stamp on March 8, International Women's Day. The Finnish postal services company Itella decided to recognise women in various fields with the booklet of stamps.

Professor Elina Haavio-Mannila, Professor Laila Hirvisaari, the director of the Finnish National Theatre Maria-Liisa Nevala, Academician Leena Palotie, designer Ritva-Liisa Pohjalainen and artist Aira Samulin have been honored with stamps designed by Paivi Vainionpaa.

Women's Day dates back to 1857, when hundreds of women in New York went on strike to protest low wages, long working hours and inhuman working conditions. Thirty-five years later the day became a time to honour women. International Women's Day has been officially recognized since 1975, or International Women's Year.

Points To Ponder

The biggest philatelic event of last year in India was “Stampmania 2009”, the first National One-Frame Philatelic Exhibition in Ahmedabad, organised by Baroda Philatelic Society from 17th to 20th December 2009, which was quite successful. We all know that it is hard fact that no any event, either social or public has hundred percent satisfaction of all concerned – so that is another point, if some of the persons were not satisfied with the show, but don’t forget it was organised by a local society only.

STAMPMANIA – 2009 strengthen the idea of organising stamp exhibitions in India by Clubs or Societies, which was started in Mumbai during 1997 and followed by some of other clubs. It was also necessary and need of the time, as postal department in India is not taking any initiative for organising State and National Exhibitions after regular intervals, and similarly an apex body Philatelic Congress of India has also not shown any interest for such exhibitions, right from the very beginning. And in lack of such exhibitions, how can budding philatelists of this country will flourish themselves and be eligible for higher exhibitions.

Now in this year some other such shows we are going to witness, starting from “Stamp-Fiesta – 2010”, a stamp festival of Punjab, from 7th to 9th May 2010, being organised by Ludhiana Philatelic Club, which will be a State Level Philatelic Exhibition. Ludhiana Philatelic Club is the only club in state, which is organising philatelic exhibitions regularly since 1975.

Similarly, “Bharatiya Daktikit Sangstha” of Kolkata has also announced a National Philatelic Exhibition, with the active cooperation from some of other individuals and clubs, namely “Stamps of India National Exhibition” from December 10-12, 2010 at NSIC Exhibition Ground, New Delhi. Other details are still awaited and hope that will be available to one and all really very soon. The Bharatiya Daktikit Sangstha, has earlier organised a national philatelic exhibition “CINEPEX” in Kolkata in 1990. They also had organised philatelic exhibitions in 1979, 1980, 1981 at Kolkata, besides a stamp show at India International Film Festival 1994 at Kolkata and two stamp shows at Mumbai – including one sponsored by National Film Development Corporation.

Like all of you, I also know that “India Post” is going to organise “INDIPEX-2011”, World Philatelic Exhibition from February 12 to 18, 2011 in Hall Nos. 8-11 of Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. INDIPEX-2011 is organised by India Post, Government of India in collaboration with the Philatelic Congress of India (PCI) under the patronage of the Federation Internationale de Philatelie (FIP) and the auspices of the Federation of Inter-Asian Philately (FIAP). Last date for receiving application form for participation in this exhibition at Secretariat is 31 May, 2010. But still we all are awaiting first bulletin of the same exhibition in India! There is no any online detailed information provided by the organizers so far.

Postal Department of India is going to organize district and state level exhibitions in different parts of India in this year. Some of them are already announced. However, we hope that this year will be a landmark for all stamp collectors in India to prove them selves for future International Exhibition. We wish all the best to one and all.

The Society is going to launch its own complete website once again very soon, which has already registered and available on air at
